Making an Impact One Grand Challenge at a Time

Why Grand Challenges?

Grand Challenges are the wicked problems society faces, intractable and difficult to solve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements. Yet, they must be addressed for humanity and life on Earth to survive and thrive. I have dedicated my work to addressing these overwhelming issues.

Grand Challenges are too big for any one mind to wrap itself around, let alone devise solutions for. They are multi-dimensional with systemic roots that manifest in legislation, policies, social behavior, and individual thoughts that constrain and limit our ability to address them.

Yet, there are models and frameworks that I have used to help organizations and activists work together to make real progress. They come from my experience working at the World Bank, where I have seen multi-national challenges fail and succeed, as well as my experience working with leaders of professional societies who have tackled many of the Grand Challenges I have helped to conceive, design and execute.

Grand Challenges fit the needs of the day. As civilization addresses deeply embedded and complex issues like climate change, partisan politics, justice and equity, and the international of viral disease, the Grand Challenge models show how to create the social movements that marshall collective problem-solving and massive action.

What is Visionary Leadership?

Visionary leadership is transformative. Once inspired, it penetrates the ordinary; it reaches through time into the future to bring out the very best the world has to offer. A visionary leader not only anticipates events, but actively influences the future. Visionary capacities are infectious; nurturing your own enables others to flourish.

Visionary leadership identifies challenges and growth opportunities before they happen, while positioning to produce extraordinary results that make a genuine contribution to the world.

Visionary Leaders are masters at analyzing the environment, scanning for untapped capabilities, examining unmet needs, mining core expertise, and sensing future potentialities. They’re adept at detecting larger patterns and predicting possibilities for collective impact. They spot new VIPs from whom to learn, as well as key partners with whom to engage—in substantive visioning; bringing together emerging trends and insights; and giving shape to what is possible in the near-term. Visionary leaders are good at leaning in and listening. They’re Jedis at facilitating leadership in others; true craftspeople at capturing chance, change, and opportunity; and the first in line to seize the right innovative strategy.

Visionary leaders are Jedis of the future.
